The International Mother Language Day that UNESCO has been celebrating for nearly 20 years with the aim of preserving linguistic diversity and promoting mother tongue-based multilingual education. Linguistic diversity is increasingly threatened as more and more languages fade away. One language disappears on average every two weeks, taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage. Quite a few proposals around improving performance the academic performance of students involve very costly interventions. Even though many of these surely come accurate on the cost-benefit tests, but they surely can be enormously challenging, both politically and economically, to ensure a successful functioning and implementation.
